In this episode I’m speaking with Nancy Quero. She came to the US at the age of 18 from the state of Ouaxaca, Mexico. Grand Rapids has about a 15% Hispanic population as of the most recent census data. But that doesn’t begin to capture the many cultural nuances of Latin peoples in the state of Michigan or the country as a whole. Nancy proudly claims her Zapotec heritage, and she incorporates certain concepts into the clothing designs she sells online. She believes the concept of Guelaguetza–which translates as a “reciprocal exchange”—that this can be a way for ethnic identity and diversity to be richly celebrated among many different groups.
